VA Approval
The VA Aid and Attendance benefit is available for veterans, spouses, and widows of veterans that served at least 90 days of active duty during the war time dates below. The veteran did not have to serve overseas to qualify. The veteran, spouse or widow must require the aid of a caregiver for at least two activities of daily living (ADL’s) such as eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, walking and dressing. The caregiver does not have to be hired through an agency, the VA allows for care to be provided by a family member or friend.
•World War II: December 7, 1941, through December 31, 1946, extended to July 25, 1947, where continuous with active duty on or before December 31, 1946
•Korean Conflict: June 27, 1950, through January 31, 1955.
•Vietnam Era: February 28, 1961 — May 7, 1975, for Veterans who served in the Republic of Vietnam during that period; otherwise August 5, 1964 — May 7, 1975
•Persian Gulf War: August 2, 1990, through a date to be prescribed by Presidential proclamation or law
